Correctional Facility Release Paths
The Shelby County Correctional Facility is the county's only identified adult jail serving the general jail function. A person may leave its physical custody in several ways. Bond or own recognizance can return a defendant to the community while the case continues. Dismissal, time served, completion of a local sentence, or a court order may also support community release. Probation, called community control in many Ohio court records, can begin after the jail stay ends. The exact release disposition matters because the word “release” does not mean that the court case or every form of supervision has ended.
Other departures continue custody. A felony defendant conveyed to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction has left this jail but entered the state prison system. A missing roster name does not prove community release. Transfer, delay, spelling differences, or movement to a jail outside the listed network can produce the same result.

Neither source is a verified historical release archive. Their main value is a time-stamped check of whether a name appears now. If a person is absent, move to the jail record and court docket instead of treating the absence as a final answer.

- Call the jail and ask whether the person remains physically confined, was released to the community, or was transferred.
- Search Common Pleas for a felony or serious case and Sidney Municipal Court for an adult misdemeanor or traffic matter.
- Request the existing booking and release record for the named person and a narrow date range.
- If the record names ODRC, USMS, BOP, ICE, or another jail, continue with that receiving system.
A jail record can establish the processing event, including release or transfer date and disposition. A court order shows the legal basis, such as bond, dismissal, sentence, conveyance, or community control. Neither source should be forced to answer the other's question. The sheriff's main number can help route a written records question. It does not list a dedicated jail-release form, jail-record fee, booking-photo fee, retention period, or response time.

A useful request names the person, supplies a date range, and asks for existing releasable records. Requested fields may include the booking number, arresting agency, admission date and time, release or transfer date and time, release disposition, charges, bond information, and receiving agency. These are requested fields, not a promise that each exists or can be released. If part of the record is exempt, ask for the redacted remainder and the legal basis for withholding the rest.
Shelby Facility Custody Facts
The official jail page describes a county-owned facility operated by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. It can house men and women, plus juveniles for limited periods. The page also identifies work-release and inmate-worker positions and several programs. Those facts describe the building and its operations. They are not a count of releases, nor do they prove that a given person left custody.
The public figures above come from the county page and should not be read as current occupancy or release totals. A dated state labor report uses different operational figures while discussing federal bed allocations. Those numbers reflect another source and date. They should not replace the county's present public description.

Shelby Facility Release Record Fields
No official public schema lists every field in a Shelby County Correctional Facility release record. A focused request should still describe the exact existing records and facts needed. This gives the office a clear scope and helps distinguish community release from transfer. It also limits the risk of attaching the wrong event to a person with a similar name.

The Sheriff's report page publishes fees only for incident and crash reports. Do not assume those prices apply to a jail release record. Ask the office about format and cost before sending payment. If the office says an older record no longer exists, request the applicable retention-schedule entry and destruction date.
Shelby Release Court Records
Shelby County has a useful court split. Common Pleas handles felony and serious criminal matters. Sidney Municipal Court handles adult misdemeanor criminal and traffic matters throughout the county. A felony can begin in Municipal Court and later proceed in Common Pleas after indictment, so some people have records in both systems. Search by name, then use a case number to prevent a false match.
Read entries in date order. Bond and recognizance entries may explain why a pretrial departure was expected. A dismissal or judgment explains the case outcome. A sentencing or conveyance entry may show why the person moved to ODRC. Probation and community-control entries can show supervision that continues after the jail release. Yet a court order may not give the exact time the facility finished processing or establish that no separate hold intervened.

Where Old Shelby Jail Records Point
The Shelby County jail moved to Gearhart Road in 1994. Before that move, the downtown facility held 39 male inmates. The current county-owned building is described as a 188-bed facility for men and women, with limited-time juvenile holding. This contrast is useful when an old booking or release record names a location that does not match the present address.
Facility history should not be treated as proof of a current release. It explains record geography and agency continuity. The Sheriff's Office remains the starting point for a county booking or release record, but the date of the confinement may affect where an older file is stored and how it is indexed. Provide the person's full name, a useful date range, and any case or booking number found in a court record.
Federal Shelby Facility Transfers
A 2024 Ohio SERB report documents a federal-detainee contract and bed layer at the county jail. That makes legal custody especially important here. A person can leave Gearhart Road under USMS movement without being released to the community. The local release or transfer record should name the receiving authority when that information is recorded, while the federal court docket provides the detention, transfer, or release order.
Many federal pretrial detainees are managed by the United States Marshals Service and are not yet Bureau of Prisons inmates. The Southern District of Ohio USMS office is the official starting point when the Shelby record says federal hold or US Marshals. Do not infer release merely because the BOP locator has no match. BOP becomes more useful after federal sentence and designation.
When applicable, search the BOP Inmate Locator by federal identifier or biographical fields. A past date paired with a released result means the person is no longer in BOP custody. It does not prove that every form of supervision ended. Likewise, the ICE locator is for current detention, not a historical release ledger. A missing ICE result needs agency follow-up because it can reflect transfer, release, spelling, coverage, or processing delay.
